WINTER Hazard awareness week Mon., November 4 thru Fri., November 8 The smell of fall is in the air, the weather has turned cooler, leaves crunch under people's feet as they walk, farmers harvest their crops they have spent the last few months tending, hunters enter the woods looking for that trophy buck, and families enjoy their time at the pumpkin patch, as well as baking apple pie or other treats. Many Minnesotans have fall traditions, but as all Minnesotans know when partaking in these fall traditions, winter is right around the corner. To help Minnesota residents minimize the risks of winter, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, National Weather Service, and Cottonwood County Emergency Management collaborate to sponsor Winter Hazard Awareness Week each fall. The event includes a media campaign, website promotion and social media posts. The week-long effort provides specific information each day that can be used in conjunction with school, church, or civic programs. Follow Cottonwood County Emergency Management on Facebook for information each day on specific winter hazards. You can sign up for alerts from Cottonwood County to stay informed on road closures in the county, county office closures, or blizzard and winter storm warnings from the National Weather Service.
